When you're a fast growing SaaS company, time passes differently. A year can seem like a lifetime, and looking back and reflecting on how far you’ve come in such a short amount of time, is always exciting. 

So here is a look back on everything that happened at TestGorilla in 2023.

2023 in the numbers

We know that sometimes numbers can be boring, but not these numbers! Here are some noteworthy milestones that we achieved in 2023.

  • We welcomed our 10,000th customer to TestGorilla

  • We assessed the skills of more than 1.35 million candidates 

  • We created our 400th test 

  • We ranked #1 for talent assessments on G2

And as a company, we have also grown.

  • We welcomed 71 new people to our whoop (did you know that a whoop is the collective noun for a group of Gorillas?).

  • And we grew the TestGorilla team to 169 hard-working people who are passionate about bringing skills-based hiring to you!

Going unlimited: A new way to use skills-based hiring

This year, we took steps to turn the world of recruitment upside down… And we mean that quite literally. We are inverting the recruitment funnel. 

What does this mean? Where most recruiters use resumes to screen their candidates and then use skills-based hiring as a final validation step in the hiring funnel, we think that the true value of skills-based hiring comes from using it the other way around. Use skills-based hiring to screen your candidates and then validate your candidates by reviewing resumes and references further down the funnel.

How have we addressed this? We introduced an unlimited screening tool. We restructured our product so that you can screen as many candidates as you want at no extra cost. All our plans allow you to screen unlimited candidates. And we want you to screen them all!

This was a proud achievement for us as it represents a giant leap forward in our mission to put 1 billion people in dream jobs!

Annual report on Skills-based hiring

2023 also saw the release of the second edition of our annual report on the state of Skills-based hiring. The results of skills-based hiring around the world are phenomenal! 

One of our favorite discoveries from this year’s report is that all forms of skills-based hiring are now deemed more effective than resumes (another reason to use skills-based hiring at the top of your hiring funnel).

Skills-based hiring is on the rise

There’s no doubt that skills-based hiring is on the rise! In 2023, we see 73% of companies are using skills-based hiring. That’s a 17% increase from 2022. Here are some other noteworthy statistics that came from the 2023 State of Skills-Based Hiring:

  • 88% of organizations saw a reduction in mis-hires after adopting skills-based hiring

  • 74% of organizations reduced their cost-to-hire with skills-based hiring

  • 82% of organizations reduced their time-to-hire with skills-based hiring

  • 89% of organizations improved employee retention when they adopted skills-based hiring

Launch of the science series

This year, we looked beyond the data on how skills-based hiring is making an impact and started to dig into why skills-based hiring works. The assessment team (or as we affectionately call them, the A-team) is a group of highly skilled Industrial and Organizational psychologists, data, and psychometric experts and they are in charge of developing and improving our assessment process.

Over the last year, they have been gradually publishing articles on the science behind skills-based hiring, and why this practice is so effective. They’ve also provided insights and scientifically-based best practices to help you get the most out of skills-based hiring.

The test library

2023 has been a huge year for the test library. It was only a few months ago (in May) that we were proudly announcing that our test library had surpassed 300 tests. This was a major milestone and a proud moment for TestGorilla, but we didn’t stop there, as of December 2023, our test library has reached the next milestone of more than 400 tests

We not only developed and published close to 200 new tests in 2023, but we also continued to optimize and update our test library, to keep our tests fresh, relevant, and up-to-date.

Some noteworthy updates to the test library this year were: 

  • Language-agnostic coding challenges

  • Typing tests

  • Massive additions to our available programming languages — we now have 112 tests for a variety of programming skills at varying levels

An improved coderunner

Before skills-based hiring became a mainstream practice for recruitment, it had been a significant tool for hiring developers for over a decade. We knew that we needed to keep pushing the envelope here to stay competitive. 

This year, launched a major overhaul of our coding environment to offer both functional improvements and quality-of-life improvements for test takers. 

New coding environment

To align with modern coding tools used in the industry, we also added the following functional features:

  • Keyboard shortcuts

  • Auto brackets

  • Find and replace code

  • Suggest code in popular frontend languages

And here are some of the quality-of-life improvements that we made: 

  • Light and dark themes 

  • Adjustable windows and tabs

  • Adjustable font size

  • Auto indentation

Continuous refinements

We’ve mentioned all the major milestones, but what about the little things? Never underestimate the power of incremental improvements! Did you know that if you make something 1% better every day, it’ll be 37 times better after a year? While we may not have achieved a 37-fold improvement, our consistent, incremental enhancements have significantly boosted not only the app's performance, but also your experience while using TestGorilla.

From adding more robust search filters in the test library, to test suggestions based on job roles, and optimizations that make the app run a little faster and a little smoother. Every few weeks we release a handful of updates designed to make your lives just that little bit easier, and the TestGorilla experience just a little bit better.
